Micro-interferometry for Measurement of Thermal Displacements at Fiber/Matrix Interfaces
نویسنده
چکیده
A micro-interferometric technique for measuring out-of-plane thermal displacements on a scale commensurate with the dimensions of the fiber /matrix unit cell is described. A scanning micro-interferometer is used to image surface displacements of samples containing a single-pitch-based carbon fiber embedded in an epoxy matrix. The interferometer design gives the necessary resolution to detect small changes in thermal displacements in the fiber/matrix interface region. The samples were heated electrically through the fiber to create radially symmetric temperature and displacement fields. Repeatable displacement measurements were obtained on a radial line across the interface region with an accuracy of ± 25A . A sharp expansion of the matrix surrounding the fiber was observed with each heating. Overall, the experiments demonstrate the utility of micro-interferometry for measuring submicron displacements.

Micro-channels over the glass surface made by interaction of Ar+ laser beam and Ag+/Na+ ion-exchanged glasses
Micro-channels are made over the Ag+/Na+ ion-exchanged soda-lime glass surface by interaction of an intense Ar+ laser beam and the silver ions inside the glass matrix. The Ar+ laser beam reduces the Ag+ ions inside the matrix. The Ag+ atoms aggregate into silver nano-clusters around the interaction area, inside the glass matrix. Aggregation of the silver atoms and the thermal effects of the int...

متن کاملSurface Degradation of Polymer Matrix Composites Under Different Low Thermal Cycling Conditions
The principal effects of mass degradation on polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are the decay of mechanical properties such as strength, elongation, and resilience. This degradation is a common problem of the PMCs under thermal cycling conditions. In this article, composite degradation was investigated by measurement of total mass loss (TML) using the Taguchi approach. Thermal cycling tests were ...

Displacement interferometry is widely used for accurately characterizing nanometer and subnanometer displacements in many applications. In many modern systems, fiber delivery is desired to limit optical alignment and remove heat sources from the system, but fiber delivery can exacerbate common interferometric measurement problems, such as periodic nonlinearity, and account for fiber-induced dri...
